Shaylin Lee Takesue was a 22-year-old psychology student who had a promising future ahead of her. She was a competitive volleyball player, a summa cum laude graduate, and a master’s program candidate. She was also a loving daughter, sister, and friend who touched the lives of many people. Sadly, she passed away unexpectedly on May 4, 2023, in Normal, Illinois.
A Passion for Psychology
Shaylin was born on January 13, 2001, in Chicago, Illinois, to Timothy and Michelle (Grace) Takesue. She attended St. Peter Grade School and Geneva Middle School North. She graduated with high honors from Geneva High School in 2019. She then enrolled at Illinois State University, where she pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, with a minor in children’s studies. She graduated summa cum laude in May 2023.
Shaylin had a passion for psychology and wanted to become a school psychologist. She was accepted for the Fall 2023 Master’s program at Illinois State University, which only had seven spots available. She was looking forward to continuing her education and helping children with their mental health and academic needs.
A Talented Volleyball Player
Shaylin was also a talented volleyball player who loved the sport. She played for several club teams and won a national championship with her team in 2017. She also played for the Geneva High School varsity team and helped them reach the state finals in 2018. She was known for her powerful spikes, her quick reflexes, and her leadership skills on the court.
Shaylin enjoyed playing volleyball not only for the competition but also for the camaraderie. She made many friends through the sport and supported them on and off the court. She was always cheerful, positive, and encouraging to her teammates and coaches.
A Wonderful Person
Shaylin was more than just a student and an athlete. She was a wonderful person who had a big heart and a bright smile. She was loved by her family, friends, and community. She was always kind, generous, and compassionate to others. She had a great sense of humor and could make anyone laugh. She was adventurous and curious about the world. She liked to travel, read, watch movies, and eat burritos.
Shaylin’s family described her as their “sunshine” who brought joy and light to their lives. Her sister Olivia said that Shaylin was her best friend and role model. Her friends said that Shaylin was always there for them and made them feel special. Her teachers and professors said that Shaylin was an exceptional student who excelled in everything she did.
A Tragic Loss
Shaylin’s life was cut short by a tragic accident on May 4, 2023. She was in Normal, Illinois, where she had just graduated from Illinois State University. The details of the accident are not yet known, but it is believed that she suffered a fatal head injury.
Shaylin’s death has left a huge void in the hearts of many people who knew and loved her. Her family, friends, and the Illinois State University community are mourning her loss and honoring her memory. A visitation for Shaylin was held on May 18, 2023, at Malone Funeral Home in Geneva, Illinois. A memorial service followed with Father Jonathan Bakkelund as the celebrant. Burial was held privately.
Shaylin’s family has set up a GoFundMe account to help with the funeral expenses and other costs. They have also asked for donations to be made to the Shaylin Lee Takesue Memorial Scholarship Fund, which will provide scholarships to students who want to pursue psychology as a career.
Shaylin Lee Takesue was a bright star who shone in everything she did. She had a positive impact on many people and left behind a legacy of love, kindness, and excellence. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
