The Textured Bob Is The Perfect Low-Maintenance Style

The French bob that everyone's been lusting after has a sexy evil twin – enter, the textured bob, and we're a little bit obsessed. It's safe to say that bob hairstyles are a pretty big deal RN. If you need proof just look to the boy bob and scandi bob that are trending all over social for reference). It's no wonder the bob style recently took the crown as the most popular in the world with 200k+ average monthly searches and that people are flocking to their favourite salon in the masses to get their hair lobbed off to minimise the suffering their necks are enduring in this suffocating heat.

The question is if you're thinking of braving the chop and embracing change, which bob should you go for? We've seen the shaggy bob and the paper-cut bob on some of our favourite stars, but there's also (deep breath): French bob, the shattered bob, the micro bob, the collarbone bob and the asymmetrical bob.

Still with us? Good, because the newest iteration of the bob – the textured bob – could be the sexiest and easiest to maintain yet.

An update on the perennially chic French bob that made the rounds last year and although it is still very much making its rounds, it also has a rebellious and more alternative little sister.

"This is a short, textured, french Bob that looks amazing with or without a fringe. The ends of the hair have been cut very softly to create natural movement without layers," explains Martha Mackintosh at Larry King’s South Kensington salon.

The style is incredibly low-maintenance, so if you've become something of a sloth in this scorching heat (guilty), the textured bob is ideal. "This is a super low-maintenance hairstyle that’s at its best air dried with the front tucked behind the ears to frame the face," notes Martha. "When dry, scrunch in a styling cream for any fluffiness (Larry King's Social Life For Your Hair is great), and if you’re looking for that extra movement just tong a few random pieces on the top."

Celebrity hairdresser Jay Birmingham agrees that this haircut is perfect for those looking for a grungier, more undone finish. "Think America's sweetheart, Hailey Bieber vibes," he suggests. “It's a super sweet bob with a grungy edge that works with so many different face shapes and hair textures. If your hair is a little thin, this style will help it appear thick and full.” This sounds a lot like the layered bob, so how exactly do they differ?

What’s the difference between a textured bob and a layered bob?

While layered bobs work best with natural waves, in order to create the illusion of extra volume, especially for finer hair, it does require a bit more styling. The textured bob has a much more subtle shape and also requires less at-home maintenance which is music to our ears. This means lots of movement with more subtle graduation as opposed to the square layers you will find in a layered bob.

Can textured bobs work with already textured hair?

The short answer is yes, if anything it requires less work if you already have some texture to play with. For those of us who like to blowdry our Afros, or have some sort of texturiser treatment, this could also work by using a curling wand to create loose waves for extra movement and volume.
