Who is David Sullivan? Massachusetts man indicted in tragic Cape Cod boat crash that killed lacrosse

DENNIS, MASSACHUSETTS: David Sullivan, a 19-year-old man has been indicted over the tragic boat accident that killed Sadie Mauro, a 17-year-old lacrosse star.

The crash took place on July 21 when a boat carrying six people, including Mauro, crashed into a jetty at Sesuit Harbor in Dennis, Massachusetts, according to the Daily Mail.

The Dover-Sherborn Regional High School senior was thrown into the water in the incident. Following a multi-agency search, her body was recovered off Cold Storage Beach. Two other occupants of the boat were seriously wounded.

What are the charges against David Sullivan?

In connection to Mauro's death, David Sullivan faces multiple charges, including death of a person caused by operating a vessel or boat under the influence of intoxicating liquor, possession of false RMV documents, being a minor in possession of alcohol, reckless or negligent operation of a vessel causing death.

He also faces two counts of operation of a vessel while under the influence of intoxicating liquor causing serious bodily injury.

The Boston Globe reported that the indictment was confirmed in a statement issued by the Cape and Islands District Attorney Robert J Galibois’s office.

"The District Attorney would like to express his deepest condolences to the deceased 17-year old’s family and loved ones," read the statement that did not mention Mauro by her name.

Sullivan is set to appear at Barnstable Superior Court for his arraignment scheduled on October 10.

Who was Sadie Mauro?

Mauro was a standout lacrosse player for her high school and competed in the State Championships as a midfielder months before her death.

Her recruitment page prior to the tragedy reflected her passion for her athletic journey. "I can't wait to continue my athletic and academic career collegiately!" read the page.

Mauro's body was recovered following a painstaking effort of three hours between rescuers from several state and local agencies, including local firefighters and a diving team and also from the US Coast Guard.

Responders from Dennis Fire and Emergency stated that they initially received a report from someone who was "screaming" on the boat.

The dispatchers were first informed that nobody was in the water. However, it soon became apparent after they found that Mauro was missing.

The use of sonar and multi-agency response to the incident eventually helped them locate Mauro at around 11.20 pm.

According to the Cape and Islands District Attorney's Office, Following a preliminary investigation into the case, it was revealed that the vessel involved in the crash was equipped with two outboard 250-horsepower engines with an Alabama registration.
